This photograph of a monarch chrysalis shows me the beauty of creation in beautiful detail. In August our family went hiking in the White Mountains, New Hampshire. While there, we saw a monarch butterfly caterpillar shed its black, white and yellow striped skin to reveal the bright green of its skin as it transformed into a chrysalis. Just days before it was munching on nearby milkweed leaves. (If you've watched monarch caterpillars, they really to munch. You can almost hear it.) Within twelve days the green casing will become clear and the delicate monarch butterfly will emerge in full orange and black color. When the butterfly from its chrysallis, we are reminded of our own new life in Christ. When we fall into sin, God gives us the grace of forgiveness and the promise of new life. Sometimes I feel like a caterpillar all curled up in the darkness of a chrysallis. It is this promise of new life that gives me hope of emerging, like the butterfly, into the light of creation.
